The wonders of rock and roll-and Hollywood-are opening the eyes (and dressing styles) of the villages' youth. The Georgian Orthodox Church has been very diligent in its efforts to curtail the influence of Western culture, but Father Arkadi Kebukaleshvili complained that he has to explain to women worshippers that 'sexy' clothing is not acceptable in the sanctuary.
The quiet spread of information and culture from the West is making an impact on life in Georgia, slowly becoming part of the landscape instead of a loud intruder. Experts like Nizharadze do not expect the Church's leadership to let go of their position of influence easily. Only time will tell how the Georgians themselves balance the two radically different lifestyles presented to them.
